Somaliland Rejects G7's Mislabeling: Asserts Sovereignty and Democratic Identity

April 21, ( SGN) -  The Republic of Somaliland strongly objects to the recent statement from the G7 Foreign Ministers, referring to Somaliland as the "Somaliland Region of Somalia."**

This terminology is both inaccurate and offensive, ignoring the historical context of Somaliland's independence and its distinct status as a sovereign state. The union between Somaliland and Somalia was dissolved following the collapse of the Somali government, and Somaliland has since established itself as an independent nation with its own laws and constitution, as confirmed by a democratic referendum.

It is disappointing that the G7, champions of democracy, would overlook the democratic achievements and stability of Somaliland. The sovereignty of Somaliland is a fundamental principle that cannot be undermined or negotiated, and any attempts to do so are rejected unequivocally by the Government of Somaliland.

Furthermore, the Government of Somaliland calls on the G7 to recognize the increasing aggression from Somalia and its leadership, who are attempting to reignite historical conflicts. Given the fragile state of the region, such actions are not only irresponsible but also detrimental to the peace and stability of the entire region, including Mogadishu.
