"Somalia's Journey: Strides and Struggles Towards Peace, Security, and Prosperity"

HARGEISA, 1 APRIL 2024  ( SGN ). The United Nations Security Council, Catriona Laing, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, commended the notable progress witnessed during her recent visit to the country, characterizing it as a pivotal moment in Somalia's trajectory over the past twelve years. She lauded Somalia's strides in governance and security, citing achievements such as the establishment of the Constitutional Review Committee, advancements in legislative reform with the enactment of 11 new laws, and the successful conduct of transparent elections in Puntland.

However, Ambassador Laing underscored the persisting challenges confronting Somalia, particularly in the realms of humanitarian crises, climate change, and economic stability. She emphasized the imperative of providing urgent assistance to the 8.25 million Somalis in dire need of humanitarian aid, a situation exacerbated by prevailing drought and conflict dynamics.

Expressing appreciation for the unwavering support of the international community in Somalia's state-building endeavors, Ambassador Laing urged sustained commitment to the nation's progress. She highlighted the necessity of addressing the root causes of conflicts, advocating for investment in development projects, and bolstering governmental initiatives aimed at fostering stability and peace.

In summarizing her remarks, Ambassador Laing juxtaposed Somalia's commendable advancements with the enduring challenges that demand continued international support. She called upon the United Nations and its partners to intensify their collaborative efforts in assisting Somalia in surmounting these obstacles, ultimately striving towards the attainment of enduring peace, security, and prosperity for its populace.
