Somalia Shuns G7, Rejects Ethiopia Dialogue Amid Crisis!

20 April Somali Global News -  he Somali government has declined a request from the G7 nations to engage in talks over the crisis involving Ethiopia. The G7, consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, urged both Somalia and Ethiopia to open dialogue channels to prevent the crisis from worsening.

Expressing concern over the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and the Somaliland region announced in January 2024, the G7 encouraged both countries to engage in dialogue through various channels, including regional partners, the African Union, and bilateral relations, while upholding international law and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response, Somalia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the G7's commitment to peace in the Horn of Africa but rejected the idea of dialogue with Ethiopia. Somalia emphasized its dedication to peace and security in the region and expressed a willingness to cooperate with the G7 and other international partners. However, it insisted that dialogue with Ethiopia would only be possible if Ethiopia withdrew from its agreement with Somaliland and respected Somalia's unity, independence, and sovereignty.

The agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, signed on January 1 in Hargeisa, involved granting Ethiopia a sea area for a port and naval base in exchange for recognition. Despite plans to formalize the agreement within a month, progress has stalled for almost four months amid international pressure on Ethiopia.
