"Ethiopian Leadership Evolution: Dynamic Changes in Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and More!"

HARGEISA -FEB, 10 (SGN ) - Ethiopia's parliament approved the appointment of Temesgen Tiruneh as the new deputy prime minister, succeeding Demeke Mekonnen, who held the position for 11 years. Temesgen, previously in charge of the government's response to the Amhara region conflict, transitioned to the role of vice president of the ruling Prosperity Party in late January, a position traditionally aligned with the deputy prime minister.

Additionally, Taye Atske Selassie, a former UN ambassador, has been embraced as the new foreign minister, succeeding Demeke, who served in that role since 2020. Redwan Hussein, a trusted ally of Abiy, now leads the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), taking over from Temesgen. Redwan played a pivotal role in brokering the 2022 peace deal in Pretoria to end the Tigray civil war, bringing extensive experience from previous roles.

Demeke, a symbol of stability in Ethiopia's political landscape, ascended to deputy prime minister after the passing of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 2012. He survived a party reorganization when Abiy assumed power in 2018 and managed the challenging period during the 2020 Tigray conflict.

In another shift, Mekdes Daba, a former World Health Organization official, now serves as the health minister, succeeding Lia Tadesse, according to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.
