SSC Exodus: Puntland Opposition's Departure Shakes Political Arena

 

GAROWE SGN -  Puntland's opposition recently stirred controversy with their departure from Puntland SSC. Following an emergency meeting in Garowe, the candidates vying for the Puntland presidency issued a press release addressing their stance on the election and SSC-Khatumo's decision. Emphasizing their respect for Isima and SSC-Khatumo's withdrawal from the Puntland election, 

The candidates stressed the necessity for an inclusive agreement to facilitate the separation into Puntland and SSC. The Puntland Candidates Council also emphasized that MPs from SSC-Khatumo shouldn't be selected before December 31, 2023, pending a political consensus on the 17 MPs from SSC. 

Moreover, they firmly stated their refusal to accept MPs elected through the signature process that appointed Puntland government MPs in December 2018. Isimada Khatumo's recent decision halted the election of their 17 MPs in Puntland, effectively signaling their separation from both SSC and Puntland. 

This decision surfaced amidst the ongoing selection of MPs in Puntland, many of whom are being nominated by traditional elders. Notably, the decision is expected to alter the composition of the Puntland parliament, particularly affecting Sool and Buhoodle, which previously held a significant representation from a single community.
